We have long spent our time championing the cause of Villa supporters and those in the wider football family. It would therefore be remiss for us not to make clear our views on the European Super League.
Disgusting. Abominable. Money grubbing. Self-serving. We could go on. For a long time, we have known that richest clubs have pulled up the drawbridge to stop others obtaining that wealth. With this proposal they thought they could stick a portcullis either side.
What we want is equality and fair competition. It certainly isn’t the case with the European Super League. Yet another example of financial greed being put ahead of the football pyramid and what supporters want.
These plans looks like they will be abandoned, quite rightly, with all the English clubs withdrawing from the proposed league, only two days after declaring their new ‘elite’ status. This needs to be a watershed moment in football. For a long time, football has failed to reform itself. It’s been by driven by self-interest and there has been a lack of independence and genuine governance.
There needs to be reform and the very strongest sanctions taken by the governing bodies of the game to stop this nonsense from happening ever again.
It is our game. Not those who are ultra-rich and hope to line their pockets. Shame on all of those clubs who signed up to participate. We will not forget this.
This has shown the power of fans when we speak with a collective voice and we shouldn’t just stop here. The same energy needs to be directed at tackling racism and discrimination of all kinds.
Football is everyone’s game!
